Speech Therapy Evaluations

Speech therapy evaluations use a combination of formal and informal assessments to learn more about your child’s strengths and areas of need. Speech therapy evaluations typically last between 45-60 minutes and a full written report will be provided to you within 1-2 weeks of your evaluation.

Individual Sessions

Speech therapy services are individualized to meet the needs of each and every child. Sessions are play-based and always incorporate the child’s interests as this is the best way to keep them engaged and motivated to learn! Parents and caregivers are always welcome to sit in on the session to see how their child is progressing and learn strategies to incorporate at home. Sessions are offered at my speech therapy clinic in Warren, CT.

Teletherapy

Virtual speech therapy services are available via a HIPAA compliant platform as appropriate. Sessions can be used when children are feeling under the weather, for conflict of scheduling as needed, when traveling (limitations apply).

CO-TREATMENT SESSIONS

A session where occupational therapy and speech therapy collaborate! A pediatric Occupational Therapist will simultaneously treat the same child to maximize treatment time and facilitate generalization of skills. Sessions are offered on a case by case basis and are 45 minutes in length.

Session Length

Session length is determined during the initial evaluation. I will recommend session frequency/length and work with each family to determine what works best for everyone.

Frequently asked questions about
speech therapy services

As a parent, it’s natural to have questions! Here are the most common questions I receive from families about speech therapy services, along with detailed answers to help you make informed decisions about your child’s communication needs.

?
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

You should consider speech therapy if your child:

  • Is difficult for family members to understand
  • Gets frustrated when people don’t understand them
  • Substitutes sounds consistently (saying “tat” for “cat” or “wittle” for “little”)
  • Is behind age-appropriate speech milestones
  • Has been recommended for evaluation by teachers or pediatricians

If you have a concern about your child’s speech and/or language skills, it is always best to get a professional evaluation.

When should I get speech therapy for my child?

Earlier intervention typically leads to faster progress. Consider an evaluation if:

  • Your child is older than 3 and strangers can’t understand them
  • Your child is older than 4 and family members have difficulty understanding
  • Your child will start kindergarten and their speech isn’t clear
  • Your child is showing frustration with communication

It’s never too early to seek professional guidance from a Speech Language Pathologist if you have concerns.

Do I need a referral for my child to start speech therapy?

For private speech therapy services, referrals are not required. If you have a concern about your child’s speech, the next step is to give me a call and see how I can help.

How old does my child need to be for speech therapy?

There is no minimum age requirement for speech therapy. I work with children from birth to 18 years of age. Early intervention is key, therefore the earlier they begin therapy, the better their success.

What will happen during the evaluation?

During the evaluation, I will play with your child, make them feel comfortable and get to know them. I will complete a formal or informal assessment which may involve asking your child to complete various tasks, and/or asking the caregivers present questions about their skills and past history. Breaks are given as needed to play an interactive game and maintain your child’s interest. Evaluations typically last between 45-60 minutes. At the end we will discuss my findings and I will recommend session frequency/length. A written report will be provided to you within 1-2 weeks of your evaluation.

How many sessions for speech therapy/how long will speech therapy take?

It is difficult to predict the length of therapy or amount of sessions. The duration and progress varies based on several factors:
Type of delay/disorder
Child’s age
Severity
Home practice/carryover
Frequency and time are determined at the initial evaluation. Therapy can be increased as needed or decreased due to progress. Progress is evaluated every few months and I will be better able to answer this question once I get to know your child and see how they respond to treatment.

What happens during a speech therapy for kids session?

Each child is different, therefore every session is unique. For younger children, I use play based interventions. Research shows that children learn best through play. Play based therapy can look like: talking and playing, using games, using pictures or books, and parent coaching. For older children, table-top activities may be used more frequently in combination with structured activities and play based interventions. I will be asking your child to do things that are difficult for them, therefore it needs to be fun and engaging so that they will want to participate and try.

Will I attend my child’s speech therapy sessions?

Absolutely! I strongly encourage family involvement in therapy sessions. Benefits include:

  • Learning techniques to support your child at home
  • Witnessing your child’s progress and breakthrough moments
  • Understanding what your child is working on
  • Helping your child feel supported and comfortable

Family participation is a key component to successful therapy outcomes.

How long are your sessions?

Individual therapy sessions are 30 or 45 minutes long, which provides optimal time for:

  • Warm-up and engagement activities
  • Focused skill practice
  • Fun games that reinforce learning
  • Parent training and home practice assignment

This length allows for meaningful progress while keeping children engaged and motivated.

How do I get started with speech therapy?

Getting started is simple:

  1. Call for consultation: (203) 312-7040
  2. Schedule evaluation: We’ll find a convenient time
  3. Complete assessment: Comprehensive testing and analysis
  4. Review results: Discuss findings and recommendations
  5. Begin therapy: Start your child’s communication journey

The entire process from first call to first therapy session typically takes 1-2 weeks.

My child has a lisp - what should I do?

Lisps are common and very treatable. Most children can learn correct “s” sound production with specialized therapy techniques. The earlier we address a lisp, the faster the progress typically is. Schedule an evaluation to determine the best approach for your child.

My child has trouble with R sounds - is this normal?

“r” sounds are among the last sounds children typically master but are often the most difficult. If your child is older than 6 and still struggling with “r” sounds, or if the difficulty is affecting their confidence, therapy can help them learn correct “r” sound production.

My child is hard to understand - when should I worry?

By age 3, strangers should understand about 75% of what your child says. By age 4, they should understand nearly everything. If your child’s speech is significantly less clear than these guidelines, or if they’re frustrated by communication difficulties, or if you feel as though you need to translate for them, an evaluation can help determine if therapy would be beneficial.
